“Burning of waste stopped at Perungudi site”

CHENNAI: The government submitted before the Madras High Court on Friday that burning of waste material has been stopped at Perungudi landfill site.

The report of an expert committee, appointed by the court, had also confirmed it. The court was informed that a solution would be arrived at after consultation with the authorities.

Recording the submission, the First Bench comprising the Chief Justice A.K.Ganguly and Justice F.M.Ibrahim Kalifulla, adjourned the matter to November 12.

The matter pertained to writ petitions in which it was submitted that in the early 1980s, the CMWSSB permitted the Chennai Corporation to dump waste at Perungudi which at present along with Kodungaiyur was a major recipient of solid waste.

Solid wastes were burnt to collect metals.
