MADURAI: Six All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors of Madurai Corporation were arrested on Friday when they staged a road roko in front of the Corporation office to protest stone pelting on the convoy of their leader, Jayalalithaa, at Pasumpon on Thursday.

The members, led by the party council leader P. Salaimuthu, staged a walkout from the council meeting condemning the State Government for “failing” to provide security to the former Chief Minister.

Later, they squatted on the road shouting slogans against the Government. The councillors wore black dresses.

The police said that they were arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

In Srivilliputtur, Srinivasagan, town secretary of Jayalalithaa Peravai, was arrested for burning an effigy of the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, to protest the stone-pelting. In retaliation, a Srivilliputtur municipal councillor, T.R. Thangamankani, burnt an effigy of Ms. Jayalalithaa, the police said.
