India asks Nepal to enhance security of aircraft
New Delhi: India on Friday asked Nepal to enhance security of planes flying to the Himalayan country.
The demand was conveyed at the Home Secretary-level meeting between the two countries, a senior official said. The demand for more security to Indian aircraft operating in the Himalayan country assumes significance in view of the hijacking of IC-814 in December 1999 from Kathmandu to Kandahar.
Sources said with Nepal being a hot spot for tourists from India, New Delhi made a strong case for a fool-proof security mechanism.
On the first day of the two-day talks, the broad parameters of agreements, including smuggling of arms, ammunition, drugs and fake currency, were discussed. New Delhi also assured Kathmandu to help strengthen Nepal Police and setting up of a Nepal Police Academy in the neighbouring country. — PTI
