Tintu Luka rewrites record

WINNING JUMP: Steny Michael on way to setting a record in the girls’ under-18 high jump.

KOCHI: Despite being way below her best, Kozhikode’s Tintu Luka comfortably shattered the under-20 girls’ 800m meet record in the Holiday Group Kerala State athletics championship which began at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on Friday evening.

The 19-year-old, a trainee of the Usha School of Athletics, was in a league of her own in the final. Tintu’s was one of the six records to fall.

Steny Michael (under-18 girls’ high jump), J. Saranya (under-20 girls’ shot put), U.N. Arun Kumar (under-18 boys’ 800m), C.S. Sindhyamol (under-18 girls’ 300m) and V. P. Alfin (under-16 boys’ shot put) set the day’s other records.

C.C. Thambi, CMD of Holiday Group, inaugurated the three-day meet.

The results: Boys, under-20: 800m: 1. Vipin Francis (Ktm) 1:58.5s; 2. M.K. Nidhin (Ekm); 3. P.V. Bijumon (Pkd).

Discus: 1. Manu Stephen (Kzd) 37.21m; 2. Arun Varghese (Tsr); 3. Arjun Kuriakose (Ekm).

Under-18: 100m: 1. M.M. Sreeraj (Ekm) 10.91s; 2. T. Blessen (Tvm); 3. P. B. Gireesh (Ekm).

800m: 1. U.N. Arun Kumar (Ktm) 1:54.9s (NMR; OR: Robin Rose Mani, Idk, 1:56.28, 2006); 2. C.M. Neeraj (Tsr), 3. V.R. Lijin (Tvm).

Long jump: 1. P.R. Rejin (Tvm, 6.64m); 2. Vinod Antony (Klm); 3. A.P. Santhunish (Mlp).

Under-16: 100m: 1. O.S. Sujith (Ksgd) 11.53; 2. Thomas Vazhavelil (Ktm); 3. Rijo P. Sebastian (Ktm).
