KOTTAYAM: Ernakulam and Kasaragod entered the semifinals in the men’s section of the 53rd State senior basketball championships at the Nehru Stadium here on Friday. In the quarterfinals, Ernakulam defeated Kannur 42-22, while Kasaragod from behind to beat Thirssur 60-57. In the women’s section, Thrissur squeezed out a 94-88 win over Kannur and qualified for the semifinals. Kottayam gained direct entry into semifinals after topping group B. Kottayam defeated Thrissur 76-65 to win group B. Too strongTitle favourite Ernakulam played at half-pace and fielded its fringe players but was strong enough for Kannur which didn’t have the wherewithal to trouble its rival. R. Manoj (12) and Subash J. Shenoy (12) did the bulk of the scoring for the winner. Kasaragod upset Thrissur 60-57 after trailing for most of the match. Kasaragod exploded in the last quarter in which it scored 30 points to squeeze out a narrow win. Thrissur started as the favourite and form played true in the first three quarters when it led 40-30. Kasaragod players struggled to get past Razeem and Eudric Pereira who were successful in preventing the rivals from taking shots from close. For Thrissur, Amal James and Bibin Chacko were at the top of their game and piled pressure on their rivals with some neat baskets. But in the fourth quarter, Thrissur made uncharacteristic mistakes and was punished for its complacency. Thrissur’s passing and shooting became erratic and so did its rebound collection. The Kasaragod players lifted their game a few notches and thrived on their rivals’ mistakes. Stiff challengeThrissur women warded off a stiff challenge from Kannur before winning 93-88 in the first quarterfinal. Perhaps, Kannur lost the plot in the first quarter itself when it conceded a 10-point lead. Though Kannur came up with a much improved show in the last three quarters it couldn’t cover the lost ground. Thrissur had an obvious advantage in height and made it count when it came to rebounds. Dhanya (28), Agnus (18) and Neethu (18) did the bulk of scoring for Thrissur, while P.S. Neenumol (24) top-scored for the loser. The results: Men (quarterfinals): Kasaragod 60 (Shabu 21, C.V. Ratheesh 15, Mahesh 10) bt Thrissur 57 (Amal James 19, Raseel 12, Bibin Chacko 12). Ernakulam 42 (Manoj 12, Subash J. Shenoy 12) bt Kannur 22 (Shan Shaukatali 11). Women (quarterfinals): Thrissur 94 (Dhanya 28, Agnus 18, Neethu 18) bt Kannur 88 (P.S. Neenumol 24). League: Group B: Kottayam 76 (Anju Mohan 24, P.V. Remya 16, Anu 10) bt Thrissur 65 (Dhanya 16, Merlin 15, Sini 10).
