Two farmers commit suicide

HASSAN: Two farmers, who consumed poison a fortnight ago, died in Hassan district on Friday. Both were potato growers and unable to clear their loans

Superintendent of Police K V Sharatchandra said that Nanje Gowda of Bettadanuru in Belur taluk borrowed Rs. 30,000 from Cauvery Gramin Bank in Halebeed branch. Unable to clear the bank loan as well as other loans, he consumed poison a few days ago. He was shifted to a private hospital in Hassan and from there to Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences. He died in HIMS on Friday.

In another case, Kantharaju of Ganguru in Holenarsipura taluk consumed poison five days ago.

He too had availed loans and was unable to clear his loans. He died on Friday at the government hospital in Holenarsipura.

The two farmers had cultivated potato in 1.25 acres of land each and lost their crop when blight disease attacked their crop.

They were disappointed when they were informed that they would not get compensation for the lost crop.
