NEW DELHI: At a three-hour sitting of its Central Election Committee here on Friday evening, the Bharatiya Janata Party declared the names of 115 candidates for the Madhya Pradesh Assembly election and 43 names were finalised for Jammu and Kashmir. The expectation is that the Delhi list will be cleared on Saturday.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan will contest once again from Budhni, clearing some doubt on this score. In the list of 115 names, 28 sitting MLAs find themselves dropped, including one Minister Narayan Kabir Panthi. In fact, party sources disclosed that several other ministers were facing the axe but somehow managed to save their ticket.

Among the Madhya Pradesh candidates are Surendra Patwa, nephew of former Chief Minister Sunderlal Patwa, who will try his luck from Bhojpur. Another former Chief Minister Kailash Joshi’s son Deepak Joshi has been given the ticket for Haatpilliya, while the brother of MP Faggan Singh Kulaste (of the cash-for-votes fame) Ram Pyare Kulaste will contest from Niwas.

Party general secretary Ananth Kumar told reporters that there were 75 sitting MLAs in the fray from the seats declared on Friday. Of these 28 MLAs have not been repeated while 47 have been accommodated. Only 14 women figure in the list of 115.

One sitting MP Rampal Singh is to contest from Silwani while Rajendra Pandey, son of MP Laxmi Narayan Pandey has been accommodated from Jawra.

Gupta in J&K List

For Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP finalised 43 names on Friday, while 12 had been declared earlier. The party’s state unit president Ashok Khajuria will contest from Jammu-East, another heavyweight, Chamanlal Gupta, one of the tallest leaders of the party from that region, has been given the Jammu-West ticket.

The Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti is not contesting the election. Shilpi Verma, widow of Kuldip Verma who died during the agitation has been given the ticket for Bishnah.

The party has decided to leave three of the four seats in the Ladakh region to the United Territory Front, while the fourth seat Kargil will be contested by the BJP.

The BJP minority morcha functionary Ishtiyak Wani will contest from Doda and its Kashmir Valley president Sofi Mohammad Yusuf will try his lick from Pahalgam.

Two women candidates are on the Jammu and Kashmir list – Shilpi Verma and Haleema given the ticket from Uri in the valley.

The Central Election Committee was chaired by President Rajnath Singh. Leaders of Opposition L.K. Advani and Jaswant Singh were present.
