Roddick books Shanghai ticket

PARIS: Andy Roddick overcame Gilles Simon, beating him 6-3, 7-5, to seal his spot in the Masters Cup in Shanghai and defending champion David Nalbandian beat ninth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 6-0 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters.

Eighth-seeded Nalbandian broke Del Potro’s serve twice in the first set and three times in the second to defeat his Argentine compatriot for the second time in less than a week.

The seventh-seeded Roddick, who needed five match points to get the better of Simon, needed to beat the Frenchman to clinch his place.

On Wednesday, the fourth seeded pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles lost their second round match 6-4, 6-2 to Juan Monaco and Rafael Nadal.
