Study: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin inspecting the second drinking water pipeline work in Madurai on Thursday. MADURAI: The Minister for Local Administration, M. K. Stalin, has instructed officials to expedite the second drinking water project work being taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission so as to commission it by December 2008. After inspecting the construction of two overhead tanks under the Rs.67-crore project at Sundararajapuram and P and T Colony here on Thursday, he said that the work scheduled to be over by March 2009 had now been planned for early completion. The Minister inspected the work awarded under the third package of contract to construct five new overhead tanks and laying of new distribution pipelines for 139 km to cater to the so far uncovered areas in the city. The existing water scheme that was supplying 68 million litres of water a day to the city from the Vaigai dam would be augmented by an additional 47 MLD on commissioning the second drinking water pipeline. “We will be able to do away with the alternate day water supply and daily water supply would be possible from next year,” the Corporation Superintending Engineer, K. Sakthivel, said. The per capita water supply would be increased from the existing 67 litres to 110 litres. Besides, the uncovered areas, which are being supplied water through 12 tankers, would get piped water supply. The officials have planned to provide 1.20 lakh water connections as against the present 84,000 connections. Mayor, G. Thenmozhi, Madurai Collector, S. S. Jawahar, and Corporation Commissioner, D.J. Dhinakaran, were among those who accompanied the Minister.
