CHAMPIONS: N. Poojitha and Jaydeep Das, who bagged the women’s and men’s singles titles in the M.S. Ramaiah Memorial State-ranking table tennis.

BANGALORE: Jaydeep Das snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the men’s singles final of the M.S. Ramaiah Memorial State-ranking table tennis championship which concluded at Canara Union here on Thursday.

In a pulsating final, Das of South Western Railway defeated the young collegian V. Akhil 11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 9-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8 after he was on the brink, trailing 7-10 in the sixth game. Das, who packed a strong backhand and played with good defence and attack, after racing through the first two games, was rocked by a counter-attack by Akhil, who took the next three games and had the match point in the sixth game.

But Akhil, in a bid to wrap up the tie, made unforced errors and a grateful Das charged right back and took the game on extra points at 12-10. In the decider, it was Das all the way.
