Waste management reviewed

COIMBATORE: A fervent call for segregation of waste at the point of generation, a warning that licences of shops will be revoked if they littered their environs and emphasis on awareness on these marked a recent review by District Collector V. Palanikumar of the status of solid waste management across the district.

The Collector told officials from the Coimbatore Corporation and also the municipalities, town panchayats and village panchayats that segregation of waste and storing biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste in separate bins would help in effective waste management, despite the shortage of conservancy workers. The Collector asked health inspectors to advise shopkeepers to keep both types of waste in separate bins in front of their shops so that the conservancy workers could easily put them in separate containers they brought on pushcarts. If the shops did not segregate waste and keep it in separate bins, their licence should be cancelled.

Mr. Palanikumar said student volunteers of Bharathiar University’s National Service Scheme wing could be roped in for spreading awareness among the public on solid waste management, especially segregation of waste at source. He wanted health officials to identify poramboke lands for waste management.
