Police raid houses of NDF workers

Staff Reporter

Action follows attacks on Shiv Sena workers

Daggers, steel rods and batons seized

No one has been taken into custody

Kozhikode: The city police on Thursday carried out raids on houses of several National Development Front (NDF) workers in the Medical College, Mavoor and Kunnamangalam police stations limits in connection with the attacks on three workers of Shiv Sena at Vellayil village a fortnight ago.

A team of personnel led by Medical College Circle Inspector S.P. Suresh Kumar carried out the raids on various places, including Kuttikattoor, Poolimadu, Povattuparambu, Velliparamba and Cherupa, on the outskirts of the city. Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) A.C. Pradeepkumar supervised the raids that commenced in the morning.

No one had been taken into custody. However, the team recovered a few weapons including cycle chains, daggers, steel rods and batons from the houses.

Data collected

An officer said that the police had collected data on some of the NDF workers believed to have carried out the assault on the communally sensitive Vellayil beach. It was found that NDF workers in these areas had attacked the Shiv Sena workers to create a divide between Muslims and Hindus residing in the area, he said.

Although the local police conducted the raids in connection with a crime case registered at the Vellayil police station, it assumed significance in the context of the State police intensifying its drive against terrorist outfits lending support to militants in Jammu and Kashmir.

The NDF has been accused by several quarters of harbouring activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
