Coimbatore: The Estimates Committee of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly led by its Chairman M. Appavu on Thursday visited various ongoing works in the district and asked the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board officials to ensure completion of the drinking water supply scheme for peripheral local bodies such as Kurichi, Kuniamuthur and Kinathukkadavu at the earliest. The panel comprised six legislators and accompanied by Collector V. Palanikumar was on a tour of the district. It first visited the Vellalore compost yard of Coimbatore Corporation and sought explanations on the garbage collection mechanism and the disposal methods. PipelinesThen, it inspected the works relating to laying of pipelines from the Aatupollachi near Pollachi for bringing drinking water from Aliyar to Kinathukkadavu town panchayat and Kurichi and Kuniamuthur local bodies. The panel asked the Superintending Engineer of the TWAD Board P. Velusamy to ensure completion of the project by December this year. It then visited Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) centre and enquired about the quality of the food supplied to children. It also visited the Kurichi SIDCO Industrial Estate. ComplaintsThe panel encountered complaints from patients at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Patients and their relatives at the MRI Scan Centre complained of delay. The committee asked the Dean-in-charge V. Kumaran to depute more medical officers to do frequent rounds to ensure better and speedy service to patients. Following complaints about poor maintenance of toilets at the general ward, the Collector and the panel asked the Public Works Department maintaining the buildings of CMCH to look into the issue. Overhead tankPWD officials said that every building was being served by 1,000 litre capacity tanks each and clarified that a proposal has already been sent for constructing an overhead tank with a huge capacity to cater to the water requirements of all buildings. MeetingThe panel finally had a review meeting at the Collectorate seeking clarifications and explanations from the heads of various departments.
