Watching the action in the middle from the stands at the Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode on Wednesday afternoon, E. Rensy could hardly wait. “It would be great to play at a lovely stadium like this,” said the Kerala all-rounder who has represented South Zone, delighted that the gates of the Corporation Stadium have been opened to women’s cricket, for the first time ever. Her turn to step on to the lush green outfield will come on Friday morning, when Kozhikode opens its campaign in the State senior women’s championship against Thrissur. M.M. Naseeha, a B.A. Functional English student of Carmel College, Mala, was one of the 22 girls who could enjoy the new experience of playing on a superb ground, a ground on which an India-Pakistan veterans’ one-day match, featuring several former Test stars, including Muhammed Azharuddin and Abdul Qadir, was played last year. Great experience“It was a wonderful experience playing on this lovely ground,” said Naseeha, who made the occasion even more memorable by claiming five wickets, helping her team score a comprehensive win over Kasaragod in the opening match. “This is by far the best ground conditions I have come across since I started playing cricket.” P. Satish Chandran, secretary, Kozhikode District Cricket Association, the host of the tournament, said a venue situated in the heart of the city would help bring more spectators for women’s cricket. “We expect more people to watch the games as the tournament makes further progress,” he said. The championship, matches of which are also being held at the Medical College Ground, will conclude on November 4. P.K. Ajith Kumar
