Be alert, Patil tells Deshmukh
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Wednesday spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh after a migrant worker was beaten to death in Mumbai.
Mr. Patil suggested that the State administration remain alert lest the latest incident snowball into a major controversy and get linked with attacks on North Indians in Maharashtra. He said the State government should handle such “sensitive issues” with extra care and vigilance.
The government told the Centre that the youth’s death was the fall-out of a clash between two groups of youngsters on sitting arrangement in a local train.
A Home Ministry spokesman said details had been sought from the State government about the incident, which came close on the heels of the death of Rahul Raj, a youth from Patna, who was shot by the police in a Mumbai bus on Monday.
