MG UNIVERSITY Seminar: A three-day national seminar on various aspects of Environmental History organised by the Postgraduate Department of History at the Union Christian College in Aluva will begin on Thursday. Sponsored by the University Grants Commission, the theme of the event is “Environmental History: Issues in Prudence and Profligacy”. Mahesh Rangarajan of University of Delhi will inaugurate the seminar besides delivering the keynote address on Thursday. Varughese John, Principal, will preside. K. V. Kunhikrishnan will speak on ‘colonial policy and the Kerala environment’. S. Sivadasan of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit will deliver a talk on the ‘ecology of riverine systems’. Papers on watershed management, river basin development, river as resource, and the status of riverine systems will be held during the afternoon session. Other topics to be discussed during the inaugural day include issues of environmental inequality, perspectives on environmental law, land history, land reclamation and land degradation. Colloquium: V. A. Joseph, Chief Managing Director of South Indian Bank, said here on Wednesday that there has to be a high level of transparency, supervision and control to avoid the collapse of financial institutions. In his inaugural address at the colloquium on ‘global economic turmoil’ organised by the Albertian Institute of Management, Mr. Joseph said that the confidence of the investor is most important. Steps are being taken in the country by the Reserve Bank of India to ensure the safety of Indian financial institutions, he said. K. P. Padmakumar, Executive Director of the Muthoot Group, said that there is an element of instinct and craving of wealth among people that led to the present crisis. Clement Valluvassery, Manager of Albertian Institute of Management, presided over the meeting. SANSKRIT UNIVERSITY Exams postponed: Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit has postponed its examinations scheduled on Thursday. The examinations will be held on November 11, according to an official communication.
