RELIEF COMING: The Harrington Road – Venkatachalapathy Road junction, which will be widened to ease congestion. — Chennai: The Chennai Corporation will acquire land in prime areas for road widening work in a few congested junctions in the city. The Corporation Council, which met at Ripon Building on Wednesday, passed a resolution to acquire private land for road widening at six locations. The value of the land would be determined by the Collectorate and the compensation amount would be paid to the landowners, said Mayor M. Subramanian. The junctions where land would be acquired are: Poonamallee High Road and Dr. Gurusamy Bridge in Kilpauk (891 sq. ft.); Harrington Road – Venkatachalapathy Road (330 sq. ft.); Vinayagapuram in Aminjikarai (2,925 sq. ft.); Sterling First Lane to Sterling Avenue Road (2091 sq. ft.); Raja Street Extension and South Canal Bank Street in R.A. Puram (8,102 sq. ft.) and on Kalki Krishnamurthy Road in Thiruvanmiyur West (4,378 sq. ft). At Vinayagapuram, the Corporation is planning to link the Second and Third Streets in order to ease congestion. Similarly, the Raja Street Extension and South Canal Bank Street would also be connected. The Council also approved the transfer of ownership of about 4,350 sq. ft. of land, belonging to the State government, in Shenoy Nagar to widen the Convent Road that leads into Poonamallee High Road. Thiruvanmiyur projectThe Corporation intends to acquire a large amount of land for the flyover-cum-subway proposed at the junction of Lattice Bridge Road and West Avenue Road in Thiruvanmiyur. The Mayor said that about 50 grounds (one ground equals 2,400 square feet) would need to be acquired for the project. Of the Rs.126 crore cost estimate for the project, the civic body would spend Rs.90 crore on land acquisition alone.
