GALA WITH GLAMOUR: MLA S.Ve. Sekhar, ICAF president S. Kannan, Guru Dutt’s son Arun Dutt and actor Saranya at the inauguration of ‘Retrospective of Guru Dutt films’ at the South Indian Film Chamber theatre in Chennai on Wednesday. CHENNAI: A four-day festival of Guru Dutt films opened at the South Indian Film Chamber Theatre on Anna Salai on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Arun Dutt, son of the actor-director, said his father was a perfectionist and did things till he got them right. A particular shot in Pyaasa took 102 takes, he said. He recalled that his father was fond of hunting and fishing. The retrospective of Guru Dutt films is being organised by the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF). ICAF president S.Kannan said that though in 39 years Guru Dutt had done less than 50 films, he had touched every aspect of film-making. His films were ahead of his time. The films that would be screened at the festival include Chaudhvin Ka Chand on Thursday at 6.30 p.m., Kaagaz ke Phool on Friday at 3.30 p.m., Mr. & Mrs. 55 at 3.30 p.m. and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday. Pyaasa, directed by Guru Dutt and released in 1957, was screened after the inauguration. Chaudhvin Ka Chand, which was directed by M.Sadiq, is a tale about a love triangle where Nawab Pyare Mian and his friend Aslam fall in love with the same girl, Jameela. Kaagaz Ke phool, which was directed by Dutt himself, is about a film star, Suresh Sinha, who falls in love with a debutant, Shanti. Actors Ponvannan and Saranya, MLA S.Ve.Sekhar and film critic Gopalie were present.
