Rajiv institute to be deemed varsity

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Union Human Resource Development Ministry has, on the advice of the University Grants Commission, declared the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur near Chennai, an ‘Institution Deemed-to-be-University,’ under the de novo category, for five years, subject to conditions. This autonomous institute of higher learning was set up by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

It was at Sriperumbudur that the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991, when he was on a visit for an election meeting.
