102 polling booths set up

Madikeri: The process of mustering started at the Old Assembly Hall here on Wednesday even as the Kodagu district administration is completing all arrangements to the byelection to the Legislative Council from the local bodies, which will be held on Friday.

As many as 1,397 voters are expected to exercise their franchise from the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat, three taluk panchayats, 98 gram panchayats, three town panchayats and Madikeri City Municipal Council, apart from a MP, three MLCs and two MLAs.

Ballot boxes are being readied by revenue officials drafted for the election work, an official press release said here.

Deputy Commissioner M.K. Baladevakrishna, who is the District Election Officer, and Headquarters Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner Chikkathimmaiah, who is the Assistant Election Officer, inspected arrangements at the Old Assembly Hall on Wednesday.

They have appealed to the voters and the public to help maintain peace and law and order during polling. As many as 102 polling booths have been set up in various parts of the district.

Each booth will have a presiding officer and a polling officer, apart from other staff. Police have made arrangements to ensure free and fair election. Polling officials will reach the booths on Thursday evening and voting will start at 8 a.m. on Friday, according to the release.

All ballot boxes would be brought back to the Old Assembly Hall for de-mustering after the polling ends at 5 p.m. Counting would take place at the Old Assembly Hall on November 3, the release added.
