Odissi Akademi to host two-day ‘Jayadeva Utsav-2008’

NEW DELHI: To propagate and popularise the famous works of legendary Oriya saint-poet Jayadeva, a two-day special music-cum-dance and literature festival opens at India Habitat Centre here on November 3.

Hosted by the Delhi Chapter of the Odissi Akademi in association with Habitat World and Sahitya Akademi, “Jayadeva Utsav-2008” provides a grand platform for both emerging and established artistes as well as eminent scholars from across the country to showcase their expertise and excellence on Jayadeva’s epic poem “Geeta Govinda”.

Celebrated artists like Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi (Odissi vocal), Kiran Segal (Odissi), Pratibha Prahlad (Bharatanatyam), L.K. Pandit (Hindustani vocal), Gopika Varma (Mohiniattam), Sailaja (Kuchipudi), Bijayini Satpathy and Surupa Sen (Odissi) and Ratikant Mahapatra and Srjan Troupe (Odissi) would be presenting their compositions and choreographies based on Jayadeva’s poetic works during the festival.

Shedding light on the event, the Delhi Chapter of Odissi Akademi general secretary and director Kavita Dwibedi says: “In memory of Jayadeva, a National Award “Shri Jayadev Samman-2008” has been instituted this year. It will be conferred on a special person who has worked extensively on Geeta Govinda. Talented danseuse and musicians from Chennai, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar and Delhi will be participating at the two-day festival.”

A national seminar on Jayadeva will be organised at Sahitya Akademi during the festival. It will be inaugurated by Department of School Education and Literacy secretary Arun Kumar Rath, while the keynote address will be delivered by Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts Kala Kosh director Gaya Charan Tripathy.

Known as one of the premier cultural institutions of the country, Odissi Akademi, Delhi, is engaged in promoting Odissi dance and music, besides classical Indian performing art forms. The Akademi has been regularly organising cultural extravaganzas for art connoisseurs and music-cum-dance lovers.
