Scholarship for higher education

Initiative is to give aid to meritorious students of low-income families
CHENNAI: The Department of Higher Education, Union Ministry of Human Resources Development, has introduced the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students, a scholarship scheme.
The initiative is aimed at providing financial assistance to meritorious students of low- income families to help them pursue higher education. The scheme is applicable to Std. XII students with effect from the 2008 examinations, says a release issued by Central Board of Secondary Education secretary Vineet Joshi.
The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the results in the Senior Secondary Examination (Class XII) of 10+2 pattern or equivalent. Interested candidates should have scored a minimum of 80 marks.
As many as 82,000 fresh scholarships a year (41,000 each for boys and girls) will be awarded for graduate/postgraduate studies in colleges and universities and for professional courses such as medicine and engineering. For guidelines, visit: www.cbse.nic.in
The last date for submission of applications is November 5.
