Diwali, Kali Puja celebrated

Staff Reporter

KOLKATA: The city was resplendent with bright lights as the twin festivals of Diwali and Kali Puja were celebrated with great enthusiasm here on Tuesday.

Much to the relief of the revellers, the cyclone alert recently issued to the southern districts of the state during the festivities was withdrawn as the depression belt in the Bay of Bengal moved to the neighbouring Bangladesh.

Thousands of devotees offered their prayers to Goddess Kali at pandals, both in the city and the suburban areas. Elaborate security arrangements were made by the police administration to prevent any untoward incident .

According to dealers in fireworks, there was a significant fall in firecrackers’ sales following legal strictures that the sound limit should not exceed the 90-decibel level.
