CHENNAI: The Superintendent of Police, Kancheepuram district, K.Periaiah, on Tuesday appeared before the Madras High Court in connection with a contempt of court case against him. The case of the petitioner, L.Dhandapani of Vadanemillie, off Mamallapuram, was that following a land-grabbing incident in his village, a person who appeared before the village sabha had given a false complaint against him and other villagers. The petitioner alleged that he received a threatening call from the Fisheries Minister, K.P.P.Samy. Following this, he filed a complaint with the Mamallapuram police, but no FIR was registered. Only a CSR number was given. He moved the Madras High Court which directed the Superintendent of Police to provide adequate police protection to him and his family members. Following a contempt petition by Mr.Dhandapani alleging that the police official who, he said, was aware of the order, but deliberately flouted it by not providing any protection to him and family members, the court ordered notice directing the SP and the Inspector, Mamallapuram police station, Veliyappan, to appear in person on Tuesday. Accordingly, the two appeared before Justice M.Jeyapaul. In his counter affidavit, Mr.Periaiah said since the court ordered notice to him for his appearance, he was tendering his unconditional apology without going into the merits of the petition. He submitted that in compliance with the court order, a police constable had been posted on bandobust duty from August 30 on shift basis round the clock. The petitioner and his family members had been given adequate security. There had not been a single allegation of threat to the petitioner or his family members. That the police constables were on duty was endorsed by the Inspector in the “Picket Book” maintained by the Mamallapuram police station. The court has posted the matter after a week.
