Fake charge sheet: CBI arrests head constable
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI. A police head constable who created a fake chargesheet to favour a businessman’s son involved in a road accident in 2006 was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in Coimbatore on Tuesday.
According to CBI sources, V. Chandru (19), then a minor, drove a luxury car without a valid driving licence and hit a 14-year-old girl in the Perur police station limits near Coimbatore.
The victim suffered multiple fractures. The police had registered a case of hit and run.
In a bid to protect the minor, his father’s driver, Rengarajan, surrendered before the police and confessed to having driven the vehicle that caused the accident.
However, the Inspector of Police who investigated the case detected the manipulation and filed a charge sheet fixing Chandru as the accused.
Ayyamuthu, who was in-charge of the court proceedings, created a fake charge sheet making Rengarajan as the accused and forged the signature of the Inspector.
Though the case ended in conviction, the insurance company that was directed to compensate made discreet enquiries and refused to pay as it had reasons to believe that Rengarajan was not the real accused involved in the accident.
A special team of the CBI that took up investigation on the directions of the Madras High Court arrested Ayyamuthu and Chandru on Tuesday. They were produced in a special court and remanded to judicial custody.
