CHENNAI: Most staple vegetables continued to be priced high on Tuesday, a day after Deepavali. The recent rains and the poor arrivals were attributed as reasons for the escalating price. Vendors at the Koyambedu wholesale market said the sales were dull, as many cost-conscious households refrain from buying vegetables immediately before and after a major festival. Though the cost of tomatoes was less than last week’s price, there were not many buyers in the market. President of Chennai Koyambedu Periyar Market Tomato Vendors Association M.Thiyagarajan said there was a decline in price of tomatoes from Rs.35 per kg last week to Rs.30 a kg on Tuesday. The retail price ranged between Rs.35-Rs.40 a kg. The arrivals from neighbouring states, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, were improving but not enough to meet the demand. On Tuesday, the market received 400-450 tonnes of tomatoes as against the demand of 700 tonnes daily, he said. Member of Marker Management Committee V.R.Soundararajan said the price of brinjals went up on Tuesday. A kg of the vegetable was sold for Rs.10-Rs.12 in the wholesale market due to poor arrivals from Andhra Pradesh and Kumbakonam. The market received only five lorry loads of the produce as against the usual supply of 15 lorry loads. Carrots and beans, which were sold at Rs.25 a kg were the other expensive vegetables in the market. They were sold for at least Rs.5 more in the retail market, he added. While green chillies were sold at Rs.20 a kg, ginger was priced at Rs.30 a kg. Some of the vegetables, whose prices did not witness major change in the past few days, include onions (Rs.12 a kg), potatoes and beet root sold at Rs.10 a kg. Drumsticks were priced at Rs.15 a kg in the wholesale market. The price is expected to come down in about a month, Mr.Soundararajan said.
