CHENNAI: Following the recent heavy rain that caused inundation in several parts of Avadi, its Municipality has set up a 24-hour helpline - 26554440 - to address monsoon-related problems. A Municipality official said the helpline, launched on Friday, received 12 calls from the residents on the same day. Most of the complaints pertained to water-logged streets, lack of streetlights and water supply pipeline burst. A team comprising sanitary workers, electrician and plumber has been posted on night shift to attend to the complaints. The helpline would be available till December-end, the official said. The municipality has identified various low-lying areas such as Shankar Nagar, Vasantham Nagar, Karumariamman Koil Street and Tamil Nadu Housing Board area in Paruthipattu to rush relief in the event of flooding. Besides draining out stagnant rainwater in areas such as South Street in Shankar Nagar and Saraswathi Nagar, the municipality was involved in constructing earthen drains in various places areas such as Pattabiram Siding and Kamaraj Nagar to facilitate free flow of water into the nearby water bodies. The 13 water bodies in and around the area, including Nemilichery, Kovilpathagai and Avadi lakes, were also being monitored for breach of bund or overflow. As a precautionary measure to tackle breach nearly 150 sand bags have been placed in the weak spots of the bund of Paruthipattu lake, the municipality official said. The local body has procured about 750 sand bags to plug breaches in the bunds. Medicines worth Rs.3 lakh have been procured to deal with water-borne diseases. The Municipality was chalking out plans to tackle the monsoon as per direction of Commissioner of Municipal Administration Niranjan Mardi, who recently inspected the inundated areas, official said.
