CHENNAI: A host of issues, including the need to rehabilitate the tank near the Kothanda Ramar temple, construct a pedestrian subway at the Mambalam railway station and desilt stormwater drain were highlighted at a meeting here by Mambalam residents.

Participating in the meeting, organised by Exnora Innovators Club on Sunday, they said Mambalam was in need of immediate attention on various fronts, as the popularity of the area was increasing.

A resident of Sathyapuri Street V.Jayaraman said water stagnation during monsoon on many streets, including Venkatachalam Street, was common despite the stormwater drain network. It could be prevented if the Chennai Corporation authorities desilted the drain at regular intervals. A resident of Swaminathan Street P. Venkatesan wanted more traffic police personnel to be posted at the junction of Arya Gowda Road, as it witnessed minor accidents frequently during rush hour, mainly on account of overspeeding and rash driving.

To draw the attention of the authorities to take steps to rehabilitate the tank near the Kothanda Ramar temple, participants said they were planning to organise a human chain on November 13 along Madley Road, Kothanda Ramar Koil Street and Ellai Amman Koil Street.

S. Janardhanan, a resident of Kothanda Ramar Koil Street, said the tank was neglected. A large portion of the compound wall of the tank had collapsed in the recent rain, he added. The tank was also being used to dump garbage.

Mr.Janardhanan appealed to the Chennai Corporation to develop roads along the tank as a measure to ease traffic congestion in the area and benefit cyclists.

Exnora International secretary R.Govindaraj said that after a long struggle, the tank, which had a crucial role in recharging water table in the area, was saved from being converted into a bus terminus.

He wanted revival of the proposal for a subway linking Station Road (on the Mambalam side) to Ranganathan Street (T. Nagar side).

Taking into consideration the hardships experienced by people, particularly senior citizens, using the foot overbridge, Southern Railway should construct a subway there, he said.
