NAGAPATTINAM: A census to find the number of illiterate people in the district will be taken on November 3, District Collector M. Jayaraman said in a press release on Tuesday. The process would be conducted by schoolgirls in designated schools in each block, the release added. Speaking at the inauguration of the 100-day literacy campaign for women, District Revenue Officer A. Annadurai said that one village would be selected within each of the 11 panchayat unions’ jurisdiction and the campaign will be conducted to provide literacy for women. The focus on the campaign would be to ensure that women between 15 years and 45 years of age obtained basic instruction to function as literates. Mr. Annadurai said that the Eleventh Five Year Plan had envisaged equal literacy for both men and women, but only 64 per cent of women were literate in Tamil Nadu compared to 82 per cent of men, according to the 2001 census. To correct this, he said that the district administration under Mr. Jayaraman had decided to implement a programme to collect data about illiterate women and include them under various campaigns like the 100-day literacy campaign, with the help of schoolchildren, NGOs, government schemes, etc. He said that the administration wanted to make the district 100 per cent literate and requested the people to cooperate by registering themselves in the designated panchayat union schools and benefit from the campaign.
