Infrastructure facilities will be provided in the town

Works will be taken up under North Karnataka Urban Sector Investment Project

It will be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs. 35.34 crore

CHAMARAJANAGAR: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a loan of Rs. 33.68 crore to the Chamarajanagar Town Municipal Council for setting up modern infrastructure in Chamarajanagar town under the North Karnataka Urban Sector Investment Project (NKUSIP). Though Chamarajanagar town attained the status of the district centre in since 1998, nothing has changed in terms of infrastructure. The major issues confronting the district headquarters town are the declining water-table, power shortage, poor road connectivity, lack of storage for agricultural produce and marketing facilities and inadequate industrial infrastructure.

The State Government had appointed Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance corporation (KUIDFC) as the nodal agency to implement the NKUSIP. The project was conceived during the tenure of the former Minister, the late Raju Gowda, when he was the chairman of the KUIDFC. Infrastructural facilities will be set up in TMCs of newly formed seven district centres, including Chamarajanagar town in the State.

The project will be implemented in Chamarajanagar town at an estimated cost of Rs. 35.34 crore. The Chamarajanagar TMC has to come up with a 10 per cent matching grant of Rs. 3.37 crore apart from the ADB loan.

In the first phase, basic amenities such as water supply facility, sanitation and drainage facility will be provided. In the second phase, development works related to roads, a fire station, tourism and lake development will be taken up. It is said that Rs. 19.06 crore will be spent on constructing a sewage and sanitation system, Rs.3.56 crore for water supply, Rs. 85 lakh for providing drainage system in urban areas, Rs.3.81 crore for slum development, Rs. 88 lakh for fire and emergency services and Rs. 30 lakh for tourism and information.

As per the project report of the KUIDFC, the population in the area will go up to 1.75 lakh by 2041. The population’s needs will include additional water supply, underground drainage system, sanitation and development of drains.

The KUIDFC organised a project presentation programme at Chamarajanagar TMC meeting hall recently to discuss the implementation of the project. It is said that 16 acres of land had been identified for the construction of a sewage water treatment plant near Booditittu village.
