Life saving: Junior Red Cross volunteers being trained in first aid at Khajamian Higher Secondary School in Tiruchi. TIRUCHI: The student volunteers of the Junior Red Cross (JRC) of various schools in Tiruchi education district were imparted specialised training in fire fighting and rescue acts, administering first aid, self-protection methods, disaster management techniques, road rules, etc., during the three-day residential training camp held in the city recently. The camp was organised jointly by the Tamil Nadu branch of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) and Tiruchi education district unit of the JRC at the Khajamian Higher Secondary School. The Inspector of Matriculation Schools, S. Krishnamoorthy inaugurated the camp and the JRC Sub-Committee executive committee member, Kannaiyan Raja unveiled the portrait of the founder of the Red Cross Movement, Hendry Dunant. The Headmaster of Khajamian Higher Secondary School, M. I. Mohamed Ali presided over the inaugural and the Correspondent of the Jagan Matha Matriculation School, Rev. R. Sahayaraj explained the importance of such camps in the overall development of the JRC volunteers. Specialised trainingSpecialists from various fields were the resource persons and they imparted training to the participants. S. Radhakrishnan from St. John Ambulance imparted training on first aid, while P. Jeevanandam, district convenor and secretary of the Tiruchi education district JRC, imparted training on fire and rescue services. P. Cyril Joseph, physical education teacher of Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Annanagar, gave important tips on yoga immediately after the break of dawn on all the days of the camp and Parasuraman, Assistant Headmaster, Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School, trained them on overall development. Special sessions were also held to create awareness on eye donation, blood donation concept and also on cancer awareness. While K. Muralidharan of E. R. Higher Secondary School explained the importance of blood donation, Sivaraman from Vasan Eye Hospital explained the intricacies involved in eye donation. Global warming and its repercussions was being debated in every forum, and the state president of the Students and Youth Exnora, S. P. Mohan handled the topic and drew the attention of the youngsters in maintaining the ecology. The participants were also told extensively about the formation of Red Cross Movement, its objectives and the role played by Red Cross volunteers in bringing solace to the injured soldiers during the time of wars. M. Jawayar Hasan, state resource person of the Red Cross and S. Lawrence, district secretary of the IRCS, handled these sessions. The Tiruchi District Educational Officer, S. Rajendran presided over the valediction and the Headmistress of the Government Girls Higher Secondary School and National Best Teacher Awardee, L. Lalitha gave away prizes to the outstanding volunteers.
