COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board Workers’ Union has demanded that the Coimbatore Corporation should hand over the board the Rs.113 crore Pilloor Phase II drinking water scheme that is to be implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission of the Union Ministry of Urban Development. The union has said in a release that the scheme had not even taken off only because the Corporation was trying to implement something that it was not capable of. Despite the Government approving the scheme in February 2007, it was still struggling to pass through the stage of inviting bids. Had the TWAD Board been entrusted with the task of implementing it, 50 per cent of the scheme would have been completed, the release said. The union also pointed out that the Pilloor Phase II scheme and another scheme for the suburbs were necessary to meet the rising demand for drinking water in the city and the suburbs. The population in the Coimbatore Corporation areas and the municipalities and town panchayats in the suburbs was rising and this called for schemes to augment water supply. In this context, it was important that schemes were designed and implemented soon, matching the pace of growth. But, it was unfortunate that the schemes did not progress at all. Therefore, both the schemes should be handed over for implementation to the TWAD Board, the release said.
