CHENNAI: With a large number of skilled people with the knowledge of English in the city, many countries, including Canada and Australia, beset with labour shortage, are trying to tap the potential of Chennai, says a senior executive of a placement firm. Addressing reporters here recently, John Pocekovic, vice-president (Western Canada), Planet Placement Ltd, said: “With large-scale construction for the Winter Olympics 2010 in British Columbia of Canada, the demand for Indian workers in the construction industry has increased manifold.” “As the developed economy of Canada faces an ageing population, the need for replacing the people is higher than the availability of human resources in the country. So many provinces in Canada, including British Columbia and Alberta, have taken policy initiatives to make immigration easier for professionals and workers from Asian countries, particularly India,” he said. “India is the best source of human resource for Canada,” said Rupinder Batth, Managing Director, Canasia immigration consultancy services. “There are 1,367 Certified Immigration Consultants in Canada registered with the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants. These consultants help the professional or worker in a foreign country find employers and provide proper guidance for work permit or permanent residence program. They charge around $1000,” he said. Guidance crucialHe, however, says: “A worker in India can also have work permit in Canada without spending much. The processing of application will require not more than Rs.700. The expenses for travelling to Canada will also be borne by the employers. But the guidance provided by the registered consultants is crucial for a better job, and it is better to seek their guidance.” “The work permits are available in the oil and gas industry and hospitality industry too,” says B.S. Suman, a consultant.
