LAYING OUT PLANS: (From right) Ramanathan N. Iyer, director, Carnatica; K.N. Shashikiran co-founder, Carnatica; and M. Krishnamurthy, secretary, Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, at a press conference in Chennai on Tuesday. — CHENNAI: After the brief, yet a strong, spell of rain in the city, it is going to rain music from October 30 to November 9 at ‘Bharat Sangeet Utsav 2008,’ a pan-Indian cultural festival. The festival, being organised by the Carnatica Archival Centre for Music and Dance, in association with Sri Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha, will feature top-notch artists in classical music, dance, sangeeta upanyasam and harikatha. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, K.N. Shashikiran, co-founder of Carnatica, said this year’s edition would include a grand awards ceremony to honour classical musicians. “The awards are finalised based on a survey involving connoisseurs and rasikas. Awardees from different categories have been chosen. It has been unanimously decided to present the ‘lifetime achievement award’ to violin maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman,” he said. “We are truly honoured to present this award to him, as he is a living legend who has played a significant role in bringing a great honour to our arts in the international arena.” The names of awardees in other categories would be declared later, he said. Ramanathan N. Iyer, director, Carnatica, said this year’s festival would see special concerts of veterans such as Nedunuri Krishnamoorthy. “We also have a special concert to celebrate the 80th birthday of legendary violinist T.N. Krishnan. He, along with his sister Dr. N. Rajam, will present a jugalbandhi.” Besides noted Carnatic musicians, including T.N. Seshagopalan, T.V. Sankaranarayanan, Sudha Raghunathan, S. Sowmya, Sanjay Subramaniam and Vijay Siva, renowned Hindustani musicians such as Mohan Veena exponent Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Ashwini Bhide Deshpande will take part in the festival. Ms. Deshpande will present a concert featuring abhangs. Noted dancer Anita Ratnam will present a special dance medley. Several upcoming and young musicians are also part of the festival, which is to be held at Narada Gana Sabha. The inaugural concert alone will be held at Hotel Residency Towers, T. Nagar. The last day will feature a raga-based presentation, featuring leading Carnatic and playback singers. M. Krishnamurthy, secretary, Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, commended Carnatica for the initiative and said he was happy that the Sabha, the oldest in the city, was a partner in the event. Donor passes are available for those who wish to have seats reserved. Rasikas will be allowed free entry for the remaining seats on a first-come first-served, organisers said.
