THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Water Works Swimming Pool, in the city, will be modernised in line with the specifications of FINA, the International Swimming Federation. Disclosing this at a press conference on Tuesday, the Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar, after visiting the pool along with Water Resources Minister, N.K.Premachandran, said the work on the project would start shortly and completed before June 2010. The existing pool built in 1962, he said, would be retained for warm-up purposes. The new pool will come up adjacent to the old pool. For the purpose, the existing office buildings of the Kerala Water Authority and the galleries will be demolished. Besides the amount of Rs. 1.50 crore included in the current year’s budget for the project, an additional sum of Rs. 3.50 crore will be required for the renovation of the complex. The project will be complete well before the 35th National Games is held in Kerala. A six-member committee, three each from the Sports Department and the Kerala Water Authority, will supervise the modernisation programme, Mr. Vijayakumar said. — Special Correspondent
