Orissa to set up flood shelters

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: As the State was getting ready to observe the Orissa Disaster Preparedness Day and remember all those who lost their lives in the super-cyclone on Oct. 29 nine years ago, the State has announced to establish 50 flood shelters in the flood-prone regions for which Rs. 23 crore from the CM’s Relief Fund was sanctioned.

The flood shelters are likely to be completed before the arrival of next monsoon.

The amount was received in the CMRF from various organisations and individuals to provide relief and to rehabilitate the lakhs of people who were affected by the recent floods in the Mahanadi river system.

During normal times, the flood shelters would be used as school buildings.

The government had constructed over 90 cyclone shelters in the aftermath of the super-cyclone that badly affected the coastal region on October 29.
