Letters to the Editor
The decision of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief, M. Karunanidhi, to defer the resignation of MPs from the State over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue is welcome. The resignations would have achieved nothing other than toppling the UPA government at the Centre. The Tamils of Sri Lanka would not have benefited in any way. New Delhi should take concrete steps to end the suffering of the innocent civilians in the island nation without associating them with the Sri Lankan army’s offensive against the LTTE. J. Eden Alexander, Thanjavur The deft handling of the Sri Lankan Tamils issue by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Mr. Karunanidhi’s positive response have saved the Centre from a major crisis. The interview with Sivanesathurai Santhirakanthan, Chief Minister of Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province (Oct. 27), should calm even the staunch supporters of separatism and make them revise their decision to indulge in acts spurred by emotion rather than sound reason.
