Special Correspondent

CHICKBALLAPUR: Around 800 people, mainly women, have recently been employed by textile major Raymond, which has set up a suit and blazer manufacturing unit at a cost of Rs. 80 crore in Gauribidanur taluk, in the industrially backward Chickballapur district.

The new unit, which has come up at Gundapura village on the outskirts of Gauribidanur town, launched production on Saturday. The unit is said to be the largest employer in the district.

As a welfare measure, the management has set up a “balawadi” centre on its premises, where the children of the women working in the industry, will be cared for. This is the fourth such unit Raymond has established in Karnataka.

Participating in the inauguration of the unit, the Gauribidanur MLA N.H. Shivashankar Reddy said that an industrial area would soon come up at Kudumalakunte village in Gauribidanur taluk, and it would house around 50 industries.
