Udhagamandalam: A solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial of the Madras Regimental Centre (MRC) marked the observance of the Infantry Day at Wellington, near here, on Monday.

Lt. Gen. H.P.S. Klair, Commandant, Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), led a group of serving and retired personnel in laying wreaths.

Among those who participated was Brigadier V.P. Kashyap, Commandant, MRC. A large number of officers from the three services, ex-servicemen and civilian dignitaries paid tributes to the war heroes.

Congratulating the infantry members on the auspicious occasion, Lt. Gen. Klair exhorted them to be always in a state of preparedness to meet any challenge.

October 27, 1947 was a red letter day in the nation’s history. On that day, the infantrymen first air-landed in the Kashmir valley and overpowered the Pakistani invaders near the Srinagar airfield.
