Big response to scheme for women
Special Correspondent
JAIPUR: The Janani Suraksha Yojana launched in Rajasthan as part of the National Rural Health Mission in September 2005 has led to a remarkable increase in institutional deliveries from 28 per cent to 55 per cent over the past three years. Pregnant women have approached both government-run and registered private hospitals for deliveries.
According to an official release here on Tuesday, over 14.19 lakh women have so far benefited from the institutional delivery facility at various medical institutions across the State as a result of wide publicity given to the scheme.
The principal objectives of the flagship scheme are reduction in the maternal and infant mortality ratios as well as registration of all pregnancies, pre-natal care and protection of mother and newborn children.
The scheme provides for payment of Rs.1,400 to women belonging to rural areas after the institutional delivery and Rs.500 to the motivators. In the urban areas, the payments are Rs.1,000 and Rs. 200, respectively. Women belonging to below poverty line (BPL) families are given a financial assistance of Rs.500 for deliveries at home.
The release said women motivators, known as “Asha”, are making a significant contribution to successful implementation of the scheme in the villages. The motivators get pregnant women registered for the scheme at Anganwadi centres.
