VELLORE : Awareness of cadaver organ donation, wherein the organs of brain-dead road accident victims are harvested with the consent of parents , seems to have spread to different parts of Tamil Nadu. A farmer family of Periyakukkundhi in Arcot taluk has come forward to donate the organs of a family member. Indirani (40) belonging to the village, was declared brain-dead by Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, 18 hours after being treated for injuries sustained in a road accident near Latheri on October 23. Her husband Natarajan (60) and son Manikandan (24) have agreed to donate her organs. Sahayam, social worker of the CMC, counselled Indrani’s relatives on organ donation. He explained to them the gesture of the parents of Hithendran, a youth declared brain-dead following an accident that took place in Chennai last month. “Though they agreed to donate Indrani’s heart, liver, kidneys and eyes, the organ transplant unit of the CMC Hospital harvested the liver, kidneys and eyes alone, as there was no recipient for the heart. All the harvested organs have been used on patients who needed them,” said Mr. Sahayam.
