Temporary health posts established

TIRUNELVELI: Following the outbreak of diarrhoea in Chidambarapuram near Kalakkad in the district, temporary health posts have been established to check further epidemic.

After a section of the residents of Chidambarapuram, situated close to the Western Ghats, consumed contaminated water supplied from one of the two wells, they were admitted to the nearby hospitals, including the primary health centre at Thirukkurunkudi, with severe vomiting and diarrhoea.

During investigation, officials found that the rainwater, passing through the nearby forest, used for open defecation, and seeping into the well, had contaminated the drinking water source that ultimately triggered diarrhoea outbreak. Deputy Director, Department of Health Services, Meera Mohideen, said that eight special teams were pressed into service in the affected area. No fresh case was reported from the affected village during the past 48 hours and the situation was totally under control.

“We’ve urged the town panchayat administration to provide concrete platform around the well so that it will effectively check the seepage. As a temporary measure, sandbags have been piled up. Though there is no fresh case, we’ve established health post in the village and the situation will be monitored round-the-clock,” Dr. Meera Mohideen said.
