Panel calls for law on NRI marriages

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women has suggested better coordination among agencies dealing with Non-Resident Indian (NRI) marriages and asked the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs to take urgent steps to evolve a well-defined mechanism.

In its report tabled in Parliament, the committee also sought to know the progress made by the government in taking up this “problematic” issue at an inter-ministerial committee as assured by the Ministry, which is the nodal agency.

Accessible

It wanted the government to enact suitable legislation for mandatory registration of all marriages, making the procedure simple, affordable and accessible.

The government assured the committee that the State governments were considering it.
