“Ban sand mining at Cauvery bathing ghats”

It leads to many deaths because of loose sands Resolution adopted at core committee meeting
TIRUCHI: The Federation of Consumer and Service Organizations has urged the Public Works Department – River Conservation Division, Revenue and Police authorities to strictly impose a ban on sand mining at Cauvery river bathing ghats in Tiruchi city limit.
A resolution to this effect was adopted at the core committee meeting of the federation held in the city recently presided over by its convener M. Sekaran.
The federation said sand mining at these bathing ghats, by sellers using bullock carts, especially near Oyyamari was leading to many deaths due to loose sands. The federation appealed to the authorities to stop such illegal mining.
It also urged the Corporation authorities to provide fending at these bathing ghats as they did at the Amma Mandapam bathing ghat to prevent accidents.
The Corporation should display warning board at the Oyyamari bathing ghat.
The PWD should also install a warning board to prevent illegal mining.
It appealed to the Government to provide more cots to the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government General Hospital in the city as many patients were taking treatments on the floor. The hospital could consider setting up an emergency call centre in coordination with other agencies and medical college students to attend to accident victims immediately round-the-clock and provide treatment during the golden hour.
It urged the authorities to remove the motorised fish-carts plying on the city roads.
Representatives of various consumer and service organisations including J. Selvaraj, president, Tamil Manila Nugarvor Sangam, G. Subramanian, district president, Exnora Tiruchi, S. Vadivel, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Consumer Federation and S.M. Gani, president, Tamil Nadu Consumer Service participated in the core committee meeting, a press release issued here said.
