A Deepavali gift for Tirupur residents

WAKING UP TO GLORY: A sleepy town four decades ago, Tirupur has attained the status of district.

Tirupur: Jubilation is filling the air across Tirupur, since it has been notified as the 32nd revenue district of the State.

Tirupur MLA C. Govindasamy, who requested Minister for Local Administration M.K. Stalin to expedite the formation of the district during his recent visit here, termed the announcement a “Deepavali gift” to the residents.

Thanking Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for his “nice gesture,” A. Sakthivel, president, Tirupur Exporters Association, felt that the formation of the district would act as a catalyst for the growth of the textile industry.

“Infrastructure such as roads heading to ports is going to improve, and more power stations are bound to come up once district-specific allocation of funds starts pouring in,” he said.

According to him, merger of Perundurai with Tirupur district would better the integration of supply chain in the knitwear sector, as lots of processing units had already been planned in that town as part of an expansion project.

Another advantage cited by the industrial fraternity was the proximity to the Collectorate.

The city is the nerve-centre of knitwear production in the State, yet the entrepreneurs till now were forced to frequently travel 60 km to complete even smallest of the business formalities at various district-level offices in Coimbatore. “With a Collectorate going to be established here, the businessmen can save plenty of time,” said Mohan P. Kandasamy, president, South Indian Hosiery Manufacturers Association.

The public, comprising mainly migrant workers, are by and large ecstatic.

Now, more buses will be allocated to the district, providing better connectivity to our native towns, they said.

Mr. Govindasamy said life in the city suburbs and mofussils would witness a significant improvement, as more funds would be allocated for rural development and agriculture.

“Till now, only a small share from the total allocation to Coimbatore and Erode districts are spent for Tirupur,” he said.
