Velu for consumer rights awareness
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: Residents welfare associations should function as forums for consumer protection, Food Minister E.V. Velu has said.
At a function organised to promote consumer rights awareness among residents welfare associations from north Chennai on Saturday, he said that between September and October, more than 300 residential welfare associations in various zones of north Chennai were trained in consumer rights. Topics such as public sanitation, Indian Standards Institute and weighing regulations were covered. To combat malpractices in trade, consumers needed to be aware of their rights, so such a training session was required, he said.
He advised consumers to assess price, quality and other parameters before buying a product.
Swift redress
As for the problems in the distribution of Re. 1 a kg rice, he said complaints received by control rooms would be redressed in 24 hours.
