For positive vibes

CHENNAI: A number of HIV positive children at the Community Health Education Society enjoyed every slice of a sweet day of Deepavali celebration with employees of Ford Motor Company and members of the Rotary Club of Madras South on Saturday.

“Institutional care is important for the children. But we also understand the importance of psycho-social support for them. Sharing the spirit of Deepavali with our children is an opportunity for the employees of Ford Motor Company and Rotarians to convey the concern and care towards these children,” said Pingapany Manorama, Founder-Director of Community Health Education Society. “Special homes for HIV positive children have recently been accepted by the National Aids Control Organisation for funding and support,” she said, adding: “Five model projects of special homes for HIV positive children would be initiated with the support of corporate sector in a few months.”

“We have community development hours at our office and I spend three hours with these children every week. My colleagues and I teach the children here every week,” said S. Balamurugan, an employee of the Ford Motor Company. “We get satisfaction from contributing towards making the lives of these children more meaningful,” said R. Srikanth, Director, Shared Services Accounting, Ford Motor Company and a member of Rotary Club.

“Better nutrition, medical support, care and protection for a HIV positive child at special homes can be provided at Rs.3000 with the support of the government,” said Dr. Manorama.
