Tirupur: The intermittent rain lashing the city for the last few days has not dampened the spirit of the people in celebrating Deepavali.

With the disbursal of bonus to the lakhs of textile workers here on Saturday evening, people started bursting firecrackers and distributing sweets.

Despite stringent directives from the revenue administration, people were seen bursting firecrackers between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following day, across the city. The police were yet to register any case against the violators.

Similarly, bursting firecrackers and rockets in the middle of the arterial roads connecting Tirupur with Erode and Coimbatore had invited wrath from the passersby and motorists.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had made elaborate arrangements in the city to monitor the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) level in the atmosphere till the celebrations concluded.

“The SPM level over residential areas should not exceed 200 micro gram per cubic metre and that over industrial area should not cross 500 micro gram per cubic metre,” TNPCB sources said.

The TNPCB officials had cautioned the public against using matchsticks to light the firecrackers. Bursting firecrackers in narrow lanes should be avoided. Eyes should be washed with plenty of water, if any SPM went into it, they said.
