Border cities in districts on alert for chikungunya outbreak

MADURAI: Border cities in southern districts, including Theni and Kanyakumari, have been placed under ‘alert mode’ by the Health Department in view of heavy rain.

While a general warning for preventing waterborne/vector-borne diseases has been already issued, the Department has geared up its machinery anticipating a chikungunya outbreak, according to health officials.

The districts under close surveillance were those bordering Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh including Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Kanyakumari, Theni and Coimbatore, officials told The Hindu on Saturday. Tirunelveli district was also placed in the list of vulnerable districts for rain-related diseases.

Sporadic cases

When contacted over phone, Director of Public Health S. Elango said that the alert was issued due to sporadic cases of suspected chikungunya reported at a couple of places in neighbouring States following incessant rain in the past 15 days.

In Theni district, which borders famous spots like Munnar and Idukki in Kerala, health officials have put in place precautionary measures.
