Officers to be sensitised to marriage registration

A mass registration camp will be organised where sub-registrars will be asked to assemble

COIMBATORE: Government offices will be issued a circular insisting on compulsory registration of marriages by the District Collector.
This is following a campaign launched by the Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission K.M.Ramathal in July 2008.
Speaking to The Hindu, G.P.Godhanavalli, Co-ordinator of the State Women’s Commission, observed that the circular underlined the need for registration of marriages.
A campaign would be launched at Government offices in 30 days, she said.
“If all officials working in Government departments are made aware of the need for registration, the message will be taken across to a larger number of people,” she said.
550 applications
With the help of youth volunteers, the Women’s Commission has been able to collect about 550 applications from in and around Coimbatore.
The Bar Association had also promised to submit about 1,000 applications for registration, Ms.Godhanavalli said.
Awareness needed
The public was largely unaware of the legal implications of non-registration.
Registration would act as a protection for women in case of domestic violence.
Women would not be able to seek a divorce if the marriage was not legally valid, she pointed out.
In the case of Christian and Muslim weddings, registrations were done at churches and mosques, whereas Hindu wedding rituals did not insist on it, she pointed out.
Not just the lower-income groups, the upper middle class too were not aware of the need to register marriages.
In case of property disputes and for couples who were considering adopting a child, registration was a must. Also, cases of separation would decline if there was a legal bond holding two individuals together
Registration camp
A mass registration camp would be organised where all sub-registrars would be asked to assemble. They would be sorted out with the help from NSS volunteers.
